How to Ride Again When You Haven’t in Years

From Zero to 10 Miles

starts with one pedal

Not sure where to start? Maybe your bike’s buried in the garage. Maybe you’re worried you’re “too out of shape.” The truth is there’s no wrong way to ride again—only your way. Take it step by step and have fun with it!!

The things that get in the way are often our own minds and worries.

I’ve stopped biking several times over the years. I find that it is something that I always come back to. And now, I don’t think I will be leaving it again!! BUT, time will tell, for sure.

I’ve left cycling for all the same reasons that others have… relationships, career, long work hours, kids, softball games/soccer… you know, the list is long. And even though our kids liked biking, it wasn’t something that we did ALL the time!!

Don’t Worry — You’ve Got This!!

  • Step 1: Don’t wait for perfect. Just get rolling. One mile, five minutes…. just roll.
  • Step 2: Start with time, not distance. 5–10 minutes is enough.
  • Step 3: Choose your own pace and give yourself permission to be a beginner.
  • Step 4: Join a community for support, motivation, and celebration.

What action will you take to get back on your bike??

I found that liking or loving your bike is a game changer. The bike I rode across the country is a favorite of mine. I don’t ride that bike a lot anymore, but we are good friends. My mountain bike, I bought to take on the trail while my daughter was running it. It is not a bike I love. I can ride it, but we aren’t friends.

Just like running, it’s about just getting out there and starting. DECIDING to start!! One pedal turn at a time. Ride the block or around the block. Ride telephone pole to telephone pole. It doesn’t matter. The first goal is to just begin!!

Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing more information about getting out on your bike.

I’m launching The Bike Women Bike Club for everyday women like you—women rediscovering joy on two wheels. Start small. Ride proud. The goal of the club is going to be to create a space for women to come together and gain confidence in riding!!
